Provincial Executive Council has announced the winners of the 2010 ATA fellowships and scholarships. Applicants were judged on academic achievement, contribution to education generally, contribution to the Alberta Teachers’ Association and excellence in teaching.
Fellowships
Fellowship recipients receive $15,000 to pursue doctoral studies. They are required to file a copy of their dissertation with the ATA library. Members are encouraged to use this valuable research conducted by their Alberta colleagues.
ATA Doctoral Fellowships in Education
Simmee Chung, an Edmonton Public school teacher, is a recipient of Alberta’s Provincial 2008 Excellence in Teaching Award. Simmee is entering her second year of doctoral studies at the University of Alberta. Her copublications with Jean Clandinin and fellow scholars focus on teacher education and development, and narrative conceptualizations of identity making and student engagement. Simmee’s work with at-risk children and her own experiences as an immigrant child further inspire her work. Her doctoral research examines the complex intersection of children’s, families’ and teachers’ lives in co-composing more inclusive curriculum in schools.
Suzanna So-Har Wong taught for 32 years in Grande Yellowhead Regional Division No. 35. Her teaching experiences include Reading Recovery, early intervention, kindergarten–Grade 7 and university courses. Wong is an active member of the ATA’s Global, Environmental and Outdoor Education Council, a mentor for preservice teachers and colleagues, a conference presenter and a consultant for early literacy learning. She is a PhD candidate at the University of Alberta, where her research interest is meaningful early literacy learning with new technologies.
John Mazurek Memorial—Morgex Insurance Scholarship
The scholarship recipient receives $1,000 to pursue an approved professional development course in the field of business education and/or computers in education.
Karin Goble is a secondary new media teacher at Catholic Central High School, in Lethbridge. She holds undergraduate degrees in art and education and is currently pursuing her MEd in technology leadership from the University of Lethbridge. Goble has developed courses for the upcoming CTS curriculum, presented at PD events and written about her inquiry-based methods for teaching technology.
Nadene M. Thomas Graduate Research Bursary
The Nadene M. Thomas Graduate Research Bursary recipient receives $5,000 to pursue graduate studies in a speciality in education at a recognized Canadian university. The research must focus on teacher health issues and/or teachers working conditions.
Mary-Ann Mitchell-Pellett is working on her PhD in educational contexts at the University of Calgary. Her studies focus on approaches that help educators and students develop their full potential. Mitchell-Pellett is passionate about holistic education and the inclusion of social/emotional and spiritual intelligences in the teaching and learning process. Her dissertation will measure and describe the transformative experiences of educators as they progress through a year-long journey of self-discovery and growth.
